Summary

Pharmaceutical company intelligence reports from Espicom provide a full review of the company's activities together with five-year sales forecasts for its key products. The company's financial performance is covered in-depth, from its latest results to a complete analysis of its latest full fiscal year and an outlook for the future. A section on company strategy covers mergers, acquisitions and divestitures, key agreements, products and R&D. An overview of key products and R&D is followed by a comprehensive review of the company's product portfolio and research and development pipeline by therapeutic area. In addition, supplementary appendices provide more in-depth information on financials, agreements and corporate events.

Amgen was incorporated in 1980 and is a global biotechnology company that discovers, develops, manufactures and markets human therapeutics. Amgen operates in one business segment, human therapeutics, and markets products in the areas of haematology, immunology, inflammation and oncology. Research and development efforts are focused on novel theraputics for the treatment of haematology, inflammation, oncology, metabolic disorders and neuroscience.

Amgen is the world's largest biotechnology company in terms of pharmaceutical sales and R&D expenditure. Fiscal 2007 was a difficult year for Amgen due slower sales growth coupled with costs incurred from acquisitions and expansion of infrastructure. Amgen believes the short-term loss in income is acceptible in light of the long-term advantages of improved facilties, broadened expertise and an expanded product portfolio and pipeline.

On 7th November 2008, at a meeting for analysts and investors, Amgen outlined its growth strategy, which includes delivering on its pipeline, growing in-line products and continuing to pursue operating efficiencies.

Amgen currently has five blockbuster drugs on the market, compared with two in 2001. Over the next five years, it could have three more drugs achieve blockbuster status, including Sensipar (cinacalcet), which is indicated for the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism in chronic kidney disease patients on dialysis and for the treatment of hypercalcaemia in patients with parathyroid carcinoma, plus denosumab for both osteoporosis and cancer-related indications.

The company's increased investment in research and development has more than doubled the size of its pipeline. In 2001, Amgen had approximately 20 molecules in the pipeline, compared with more than 50 in 2008.

Amgen is anticipating 17 key Phase II and III study results in 2009 and 2010, including for denosumab (oncology), AMG 386 and AMG 655 for various cancer indications, and its Sensipar/Mimpara EVOLVE trial, an outcomes study in dialysis patients. The company has completed enrolment of most of its denosumab oncology trials and expects to have the opportunity to review data from the first skeletal-related events studies in the first half of 2009. Amgen submitted its BLA data package for denosumab for postmenopausal osteoporosis on 19th December 2008.
