Headquartered in London, UK, Smiths Medical supplies devices used during critical and intensive care, surgery, post-operative care and home infusion. It is a business of Smiths Group plc and has subsidiaries in Europe, North America, South Africa, Japan and the Pacific region, with the majority of production taking place in Tijuana, Mexico. For the year ended 31st July 2004, Smiths Medical's sales were 488 million (US$853 million), virtually flat compared with 2003, largely due to the weakness of the US dollar.

Smiths Medical is focused on two business areas: Anaesthesia & Safety Devices, which generated 60% of sales in 2004; and Medication Delivery & Patient Monitoring, which generated the remaining 40%. In its Anaesthesia & Safety Devices business, Smiths is focused on single-use devices for critical care. The acquisition of DHD Healthcare in July 2004 added a range of respiratory devices to Smiths Medical's airway product line. The company's Medication Delivery & Patient Monitoring unit includes more complex devices which are used in hospitals, but also during recovery and continuing care. Smiths Medical MD claims to be the leading supplier of ambulatory infusion pumps.

In March 2005, Smiths Medical acquired US company, Medex, giving it a leading position in anaesthesia and safety devices. Medex supplies infusion equipment used in critical care, specialising in IV infusion catheters which prevent needlestick injuries.
