Summary

Advanced Medical Optics (AMO), based in Santa Ana, California, USA, develops, manufactures and markets ophthalmic surgical and eye care products. Established in July 2002 through a spin-off from Allergan, the company has approximately 3,000 employees, operations in about 20 countries and markets its products in approximately 60 countries worldwide. AMO has manufacturing facilities in Puerto Rico, the Netherlands, Sweden, India, China and Spain.

The company divides its business into two areas based on product type; ophthalmic surgical products, which accounted for 56% of the company's total revenue in fiscal 2004; and eye care products, which generated the remaining 44%.

AMO owns or has the rights to surgical brands such as ReZoom, Phacoflex, Clariflex, Array, Sensar, CeeOn, Tecnis and Verisyse intraocular lenses, Sovereign and Sovereign Compact phacoemulsification systems with WhiteStar technology, Amadeus II microkeratomes, Healon and Vitrax viscoelastics, and the Baerveldt glaucoma shunt. The product line was significantly expanded through the acquisition of Pfizer's ophthalmic surgical business in June 2004 and the May 2005 acquisition of VISX.
