Summary

As more and more Western pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies consider China as the primary choice for their outsourcing activities, it has become urgent for these outsourcing companies to have a complete understanding of the current service capabilities of the Chinese pharmaceutical outsourcing service industry in order for them to choose a right service provider in China whose service capability ideally matches the requirements of their outsourcing projects. This Evaluation is thus designed and prepared to meet this urgent need by these outsourcing companies who wish to ensure their outsourcing efforts in China will be successful.

The Evaluation evaluated in detail 101 China-based pharmaceutical outsourcing service providers that are at present time considered the strongest technically in this Chinese industry, about their service capabilities in each of the fourteen technical areas involved in the entire lengthy process of drug discovery, development and manufacturing, from the first step target identification and validation to the last step drug product registration and commercialization.

In addition, the Evaluation also analyzed in depth the strengths and weakness of the entire Chinese service industry. Moreover, by comparing with the current service capabilities of its counterparts in the Western countries, the Evaluation also pointed out where the current service level of this Chinese industry presently stands in the world pharmaceutical outsourcing industry. The Evaluation then made valuable input and suggestions as for how this Chinese industry can further expand their service scope and strengthen their service capabilities in order for them to meet the challenges from the world pharmaceutical outsourcing companies. Based on the current development trend of this industry in China, the Evaluation also made a brave but reasonable prediction of how this industry will likely develop in the next five to ten years.

The Evaluation provides answers to the following questions borne in mind of almost every outsourcing company:

  • Where can I find these Chinese service providers
  • How do I know what services they are currently offering
  • How good is each of them
  • How do I know whether they can handle my projects
  • Which one could best meet the requirements of my outsourcing projects
  • Where are they located in China
  • How can I find the most service providers in a single trip to China

Key findings discovered by the Evaluation about the Chinese pharmaceutical outsourcing service industry:

  • As a whole, the Chinese pharmaceutical outsourcing service industry at present can provide a full scale service in all technical areas involved in the entire drug discovery, development and manufacturing process. However, no any single service provider at present is able to provide an integrated service spanning all these fourteen technical areas evaluated by the Evaluation.
  • Majority (60%) of the Chinese service providers provide the services concentrated in the chemistry-related areas. They are very strong in custom synthesis, process development and contract manufacturing.
  • Only 5% of the China-based CROs/CMOs at present provide the services for contract manufacturing of APIs under the FDA-certified cGMP conditions to support the development needs of candidate drugs. This is un-proportional to their strong capabilities in other chemistry-related fields.
  • Services in the biology-related areas such as target identification/validation, disease modeling, ADME/Tox study, pharmacology, preclinical and clinical studies, are now getting more and more popular in China. At present there are in total about 20 China-based CROs providing various services in these areas. Majority of them are young in service history and small in company size. However, this weakness has been greatly offset by the presence of multinational CROs in China. At present there are a total of 23 such CROs in China.
  • There are close to 30 CROs/CMOs in China that have already had more than five years of history serving Western pharma/biotech companies. Some of them have had a decent company size (e. g. more than 1,000 employees).
  • CROs/CMOs in China at present are highly densely localized in only two largest cities in China, Shanghai and Beijing, including their close vicinities. 95% of all China-based CROs/CMOs are in these two Great Areas.
  • While Shanghai is more concentrated with CROs/CMOs in the chemistry-related service areas, Beijing is more popular to CROs providing biology-related services.

Other features of the Evaluation:

The Evaluation includes the detailed company profiles of all these 101 China-based service providers including each provider's technical information such as service scope, features and capabilities, current status of their facility and capacity, current status of the structure of their technical staff, the customers they have served so far, etc. It also includes the detailed contact information of every service provider including phone and fax numbers, mailing and e-mail addresses as well as website addresses, etc.

The Evaluation is the only research report currently available on the market that contains the most thorough and in-depth analysis of the service capabilities of the entire Chinese pharmaceutical outsourcing service industry. It is also the only report available on the market that has the complete collection of information of the largest number of the China-based pharmaceutical outsourcing service providers who are also considered the strongest technically at present time in China.

Who should buy the report:

This Evaluation best meets the various needs of following companies:

  • Pharma/biotech companies who are currently in plan to outsource any part of their drug discovery, development and manufacturing work to China and want to decide which one they should choose.
  • Pharma/biotech companies who have already had outsourcing activities in China but would like to know more service providers as their backup service candidates.
  • Pharma/biotech companies who will consider China as a potential choice for their outsourcing activity in near future.
  • Pharma/biotech companies who have been slightly familiar with the Chinese pharmaceutical outsourcing service industry but wish to have a better understanding about this entire industry in China.
  • Pharma/biotech companies or any other organizations (such as government organizations, market research institutions, etc.) who do not have any outsourcing activities in China but would be interested in closely following the development of this industry in China.
  • Financial investment companies who wish to better understand the development situation of the interesting Chinese service providers in order to facilitate their decision making process for potential investment in any of these Chinese service companies.
  • Pharmaceutical outsourcing service companies worldwide who wish to have a better understanding about their competitors in China in the same industry, as well as about where their own service levels presently stand in the entire world pharmaceutical outsourcing industry in order for them to improve and strengthen their service capabilities.
  • Chinese pharmaceutical companies and the China-based pharmaceutical outsourcing service companies who wish to have a better understanding about their neighboring competitors, as well as about where their own service levels presently stand in the entire world pharmaceutical outsourcing industry in order for them to improve and strengthen their service capabilities.
