Summary

Headquartered in the Netherlands, Akzo Nobel currently operates three business groups: Coatings, Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals. However, in February 2006, Akzo announced its intention to spin off the pharmaceuticals business under the name Organon Biosciences. The remaining businesses will be combined as Coatings/Chemicals.

Current Growth Drivers

Organon's current growth drivers are the fertility drug, Puregon and the contraceptive, NuvaRing, both of which helped to return the division to growth in 2005.

In addition, Organon signed a contract with the US Agency for International Development to supply three million vials of Megestron during 2006, to support family health programmes in developing nations.

Key Late-Stage Products

Organon is working with Pfizer on the development of asenapine for the treatment of schizophrenia and acute mania in bipolar disorder. First filings are expected in early 2007, although the filing for schizophrenia may be delayed following disappointing trial results.

Sugammadex is a new reversal agent for use in general anaesthsia. It is in Phase III trials with first filings expected in the first half of 2007.

Corrifollitropin alpha is in Phase III trials for infertility, with first filing anticipated in 2008.

Org 50081 is in Phase III trials for hot flashes and Phase II trials for insomnia.
