Patient recruitment for clinical trials: Encouraging positive outcomes
Publication Date December 2005
Summary
Patient recruitment for clinical trials: Encouraging positive outcomes, written by Chiltern International, outlines the key factors in running a successful recruitment programme for clinical trials.
As the costs of clinical development are rising rapidly in relation to the other parts of the R&D process it is essential that the recruitment process be as efficient as possible. “A degree of realism is required in order to optimise subject recruitment for clinical trials. Although there is always a time and cost pressure, any difficulties for a clinical project could actually be exacerbated if subject recruitment rates are approached in an unrealistic manner”, says the paper.
The paper makes a number of recommendations and pointers relevant for all those with an interest in clinical trials. These include:
As clinical trials have become larger they have also become more global. The internationalisation of clinical research is also important for companies in order to give local physicians experience of working with a new product
When conducting patient studies, it is important to be as proactive as possible to identify sites that will be efficient at recruiting
As a whole the pharmaceutical industry could be helped in terms of patient recruitment for trials if the public better understood the value of clinical trials and their role in the development of new medicines.

Survey of Life Sciences Websites
Publication Date June 2005
Summary
The survey by net-progress examines three key areas of performance, namely website quality, website presence and website accessibility.
The findings of this survey show that websites in the Life Sciences sector perform fairly well. Website quality in this sector is above average. This should mean that on a majority of websites examined, visitors should find that there are few problems that prevent them from carrying out the tasks they set out to complete. Website presence is fairly typical of most sectors. All the websites examined did well for the company names, and a majority did well for product names in the search engines. Performance was predictably more varied for generic search terms. The average number of links to the websites were also high, but the range reflected that some companies have work to do in this aspect of website presence.
The one area that almost all of the websites examined have much scope for improvement is that of accessibility. Only one of the websites tested passed the World Wide Web Consortium’s Website and Content Accessibility Guideline Priority 1 checkpoints - the minimum recommended level of accessibility.
GlaxoSmithKline were given the net-progress Gold Standard Award for their website performance. AstraZeneca were commended for both website presence and website quality.
Covers the following companies:
Acambis, Alizyme, Ark Therapeutics, AstraZeneca, Axis Shield
Cambridge Antibody, Dechra, Goldshiled, GSK, Marshall Edwards, Oxford Biomedica, Phytopharm, Protherics, Sector Average, Shire, Skye Pharma, Vernalis
