AMD is the most common cause of vision loss in the developed world for those over 50 years of age. We estimate there are over 20 million cases in the US and Europe. Dry AMD accounts for 90% of cases and has no suitable cure. Wet AMD drug sales will soon see the first blockbuster. Novartis achieved first to market success with their Visudyne drug in 1999. However work from Pfizer selling Macugen and Lucentis from Genentech have seen it sales reduced. These drugs are referred to in the press as 'miracle drugs' - saving sight for millions. But issues over prescribing still remain.

Key pricing issues remain critical to success for these drugs in the European and US markets. The UK's health service have refused to take Lucentis due to its cost. With alternatives available how will Genentech overcome this problem, or will they hold firm. Is there room in the market for another player? With Visudyne receiving an extension on its patent a generic competitor may have been held off, but could the market sustain a generic version?

Dry AMD currently has no effective treatment, so market opportunities are available for a first-to-enter product in this market. With blockbuster status sure to happen for a Wet AMD drug, blockbuster status would be guaranteed for a drug tackling the more prevalent Dry AMD. Who will be likely to succeed?
