Summary
The classes of therapeutics currently indicated for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) are used either to slow disease progression (e.g., acetyl cholinesterase inhibitors and NMDA/glutamate receptor antagonists) or to alleviate cognitive symptoms (e.g., carnitine acetyltransferase stimulatnts and nootropic agents). Psychotropic agents are also used (mostly off-label) to treat others symptoms associated with AD, including psychosis, depression, schizophrenia, and anxiety disorders. However, there is no cure for this devastating disease, and most available therapeutics are limited in their efficacy. In addition, the patient population is expected to grow substantially through 2009 as global life expectancy increases and as the U.S. Baby Boomers age. Therefore, many pharmaceutical companies have recognized the opportunity to provide improved therapeutics and to capture market share within this growing category. Fourteen emerging therapeutics are forecasted to enter this segment between 2004 and 2009.
