The market size is similar to that found in Italy; in per capita terms, it is in between Greece and the Czech Republic. Much of the market, for high-end products especially, is centred in the main cities, particularly around Madrid and Barcelona.
Spain has a strong medical device manufacturing sector, which tends to be based around Madrid and Barcelona. Companies, however, tend to be small and concentrated at the low to medium technology end of the market. Net production was valued at US$1.5 billion in 2006, of which exports totalled US$1.1 billion. Major export categories included medical supplies, syringes, needles & catheters and X-ray equipment.
Most of the market is supplied by imports, mainly from other EU-15 countries. Imports totalled US$3.2 billion in 2006, which represented a rise of 13.9% over the US$2.8 billion recorded in 2005; this compares to US$1.5 billion in 2000 and US$1.1 billion in 1995. Orthopaedic & prosthetic appliances, medical supplies, syringes, needles & catheters and electromedical equipment were key categories.
