Summary
This market report summarizes the results of HTStec's fourth annual global Pharma and Biotech web-based benchmarking survey on ion channels carried out in June 2007. The objectives of the 2007 study were to better understand the role of selectivity profiling of ion channels in drug discovery and drug safety assessment; the importance and study of cardiac liability testing and cardiotoxicity assessment; and the requirements for outsourced services based on these activities.
Examples of the areas the survey looked at are: interest in different classes of ion channels; number of ion channel primary targets or programs; technologies used to study ion channels; reasons for and the use of a check list in selectivity profiling where it is initiated and who are the key decision makers; most important factors in choosing a fee-for-service provider for screening ion channels; interest in outsourcing such screening; approach to cardiac liability testing and interest in outsourcing; systems used to asses in vitro cardiotoxicity, main challenges to its effective application and interest in outsourcing.
