Summary
Teva is the largest generic pharmaceutical manufacturer in the world, with sales worth US$9.4 billion in 2007. The company is Israeli-owned and headquartered, although around 60% of revenues are gained in the USA.
In July 2005, Teva announced a merger with IVAX, one of the USA's leading generic companies. The acquisition was completed in January 2006, in a deal worth some US$7.4 billion. The deal strengthened Teva's position in the USA and Latin America.
The IVAX purchase followed a previous major deal. In November 2003, Teva announced the purchase of the US manufacturer, Sicor, for US$3.4 billion. This was the largest deal in the generic drug industry at the time. It gave Teva access to Sicor's generic injectable products and biosimilar development capacity.
In 2008, Teva announced it was acquiring the US generic firm, Bentley Pharmaceuticals, in a deal worth some US$360 million. Although based in the US, Bentley's main business was in Spain, with additional operations in other parts of Europe.
In July 2008, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries announced plans to acquire Barr in a deal worth some US$7.46 billion. Should the deal go through, the new company would operate in over 60 countries and employ some 37,000 people.
While the bulk of Teva's revenues are derived from generics, the company has one major innovative product, Copaxone. This is a treatment for multiple sclerosis. Sales of Copaxone broke the US$1 billion mark in 2005. A second innovative product, Azilect (rasagiline, Parkinson's disease), was launched in 2006. Teva is also involved in research in other areas such as drug delivery and biosimilars.Espicom's generics company reports will help you to understand the dynamic and complex issues affecting the business of leading generic industry players.
