Summary

Founded in 1961, Mylan, until 2007 known as Mylan Laboratories, is one of the largest US generic drug manufacturers. Until 2007, it was the sixth-largest generic manufacturer in the world, with its operations very much based in the eastern USA and with no significant presence in overseas markets.

However, this changed during the course of 2007, when Mylan successfully acquired Merck Generics from Germany's Merck KGaA. The acquisition was completed in October 2007, and placed Mylan as the third largest generics manufacturer and now with a very significant overseas presence.

In August 2006, Mylan announced the purchase of a majority stake in Matrix Laboratories, for around US$736 million. Matrix is an Indian company with a presence in Europe through its Docpharma subsidiary. The deal was completed in January 2007.

Sales for fiscal 2007 (ended March 2007) were US$1,611.8 million, a rise of 28.2% over 2006. Mylan is currently transitioning its financial year to align it with the calendar year. For the nine months ended December 2007, the firm reported sales worth US$2,178.8 million.

Following the purchases of Matrix and Merck Generics, Mylan has been evaluating its synergies. The firm is to take a number of steps to increase synergy savings, including discontinuing activities at a number of plants and considering the possible sales of Dey and Docpharma, previously components of Merck Generics and Matrix, respectively. The moves are expected to result in around 720 job losses. In June 2008, Mylan announced it was eliminating 100 positions at its Puerto Rico plant as part of the reorganisation.Espicom's generics company reports will help you to understand the dynamic and complex issues affecting the business of leading generic industry players.
